Life's most urgent question is: What are you doing for others? - Martin Luther King

I think that most milestones in our lives bring about a period of pause and reflection. With my 40th birthday less than a month away, I have been thinking a great deal about the life that I have lived to date, and the life that I want to create in the years to come. Amongst all of the gratitude (and believe me, there is a lot), there is also a strong sense that my life in the next 40 years (if I should be so lucky) should evolve to include some elements that have been lacking to date.

One of these elements is the purposeful practice of service.

It is true that my career as a teacher is, by its very nature, service-oriented, but beyond my work my world revolves around me, most of the time. This is what I would like to shift. So, the purpose of this blog is to record my efforts to cultivate a more deliberate practice of service in my daily life.

It has been said that a 40-day period is a special, even sacred, period of time through which we can provoke radical changes in our lives. So, in honour of my 40th birthday and my desire to live a more service-oriented life, I am going to complete 40 days of service, and record my experiences here for all to see. Wish me luck:)
